Torry String Quartet

TORRY STRING QUARTET

James Torry, Mathew Gabel, Tim Underwood, and Mark Jesson

The Torry Quartet brings together four Sussex musicians who have played together in several local (and less local) orchestras and chamber groups.

Matthew Gabel graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2007.  As well as playing classical music, Matthew has a keen interest in folk music, and came second in the world finals for Irish traditional slow airs aged sixteen.  He lives in Saltdean and performs with local ensembles Musicians of All Saints and the Corelli Ensemble.  He also leads the University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra.

James Torry grew up in Rottingdean, living there for over 20 years.  He studied violin with Andrew Sherwood.  At Cambridge University he was in demand as a violinist and conductor.  James works as an electronic engineer in Crawley, but finds plenty of time for music with local ensemble including Horsham and Sussex Symphony Orchestras and Musicians of All Saints.

Tim Underwood led Croydon Youth Orchestra, before turning his attention to the viola while at Cambridge University.  An electronics designer by day, he plays with amateur orchestras and Chamber Music groups around Sussex including Horsham Symphony Orchestra.  Tim lives with his wife and cats in Rustington.

Mark Jesson was born and bred in Mid Sussex and now lives in Hove. A music graduate of Surrey University, he keeps himself busy as a freelance arranger and session player.
